Basting The Quilt Sandwich Will Hold All The Layers Together While Hand Spray basting: this method uses a spray glue which temporarily holds the three layers together until you can get them quilted. the glue is temporary and does wash out. some brands of glue work better than others. my personal favorite is 505 spray and fix temporary fabric adhesive. Smooth out as before, and add this layer to the clamps all around the table. 5. cut squares from your craft foam roughly 1 2″ x 1 2″. cut plenty so you won’t have to stop and cut more. 6. starting from the center area of the quilt top, put a pin through all 3 layers, and cap the top with a square of the craft foam.

Basting The Quilt Sandwich Will Hold All The Layers Together While Hand Quilting backing: this is the fabric that forms the back of your quilt sandwich. choose a fabric that complements your quilt top and batting. your backing fabric should be a few inches larger than your quilt top on all sides as a rule of thumb, add at least 4 6 inches to each side of your quilt top for both the batting and backing.this. Mark the center with a safety pin at the top and bottom, or snip a small piece from the fold to quickly mark the center. using painter’s tape or masking tape, secure the backing fabric to your table, wrong side up. start in the center and work out toward the ends. keep the backing smooth and flat, and pull it snugly. See below for more information about spray basting and hand basting. for using safety pins, you want to pin through all three layers about 4 5 inches apart. a good rule of thumb is about a hands width apart. this will keep your quilt layers from shifting while you are quilting. here is my quilt sandwich all pinned and ready for quilting. 1. if the quilt backing is pieced, press all the seam allowances open. this will prevent bulk when quilting. 2. place the quilt backing wrong side up on a large, flat surface. tape, clip, or otherwise secure the quilt backing to the work surface. 3. center and smooth the batting in place atop the quilt backing.
