Drb Scallop Dredge вђ Seafish Dredges are rigid structures that are towed along the seabed to target various species of shellfish. in the uk the main dredge fishery is for king scallops and to a lesser extent queen scallop, mussels, oyster, and razor clams. each dredge is designed specifically for the fishery and target species. the dredges consist of a triangular frame. The dredges used to target queen scallops are wider and higher than a traditional newhaven scallop dredge. they do not have a toothed bar across the front, instead they have either a metal grid, or tickler chains to get the scallops to lift up off the seabed and swim into the dredge. the scallops then fall back into a bag made of metal rings.

Queen Scallop Dredge Gear Seafish Fishing Gear Database Currently most of the dredge fisheries for scallops (both the great or king scallop pecten maximus and the queen scallop aequipecten opercularis) are unregulated by technical measures prescribing design features of the dredge. concern about the capture of undersized scallops resulted in the seafish scallop working group recommending that technical measures be introduced in dredges targeting. Any gear modifications that reduce the surface contact between the fishing gear and the seabed could potentially reduce the environmental impacts associated with the use of scallop dredges. this article – summarized from the original publication (fenton, m. et al. 2024. catch yield and selectivity of a modified scallop dredge to reduce seabed. Lyme bay. a scallop dredge in basically a weighted rectangular bag dragged across the seabed. the upper part of the bag is made from a synthetic fibre stretched mesh; the underside has to withstand constant abrasion as it travels across the seabed. to withstand this abrasion it is composed of heavy interlinked steel rings, each about 8cm diameter. N virodredge™. the n virodredge™ is a completely new concept in the harvesting of scallops and the first significant variation over the traditional scallop dredge design which has been in use in european waters over the last 40 years. the n virodredge™ runs along the seabed on two skids which bear the full weight of the dredge.
