Bunkbeds are pretty straight forward; like any bed, they need a frame, some rails to hold the mattress, and most often a headboard. a bunk bed is just two of those sets, but one is on stilts. my original design looked something like a animal pen with lots of dimensional lumber and rails to prevent the kids from falling.

68 Amazing Diy Bunk Bed Plans The glue and screws combine to make some really solid joints. here’s a detail of the outside face of the finished joints. next up were the side rails, which are really the “meat” of the bed. these pieces are the cut down 2×8″ & 2×12″ pieces. if you look at the plans, you’ll see that on the room facing side of the bed, i used the 2. 1. hanging bunk beds. most beds (even bunk beds) make use of walls for support. the same is true with this kind of bunk bed. however, what made this bunk bed unique is that it appears to be hanging. that’s because it only has one beam to support both beds and is pushed to the wall so that it is stable. Step 2: the bed frames. the frame pieces are joined together with wood glue and pocket hole screws. these will be hidden by the mattresses and nobody will ever see them. the pocket holes are on the inside of the short rails of each bed frame.
