By far we sell the #5 in larger numbers than the #5 1 2. if you need the wider iron width the 5 1 2 provides, that would be the major reason to consider it. it will be a bit more efficient per cutting stroke when working larger areas. due to covid 19, the manufacturing capacity of lie nielsen has been reduced significantly at this time.

37 Lie Nielsen 5 1 2 Jack Plane Review Dwaynemilar Model no: 5 1 2. this lie nielsen plane review is about the lie nielsen 5 1 2 from the lie nielsen bench plane range. the 5 1 2 is a 377mm (14 3 4 inch) long plane which is supplied ready to use straight from the box (minor adjustments may be need to suit individual users). the lie nielsen number 5 1 2 plane has a stress relieved ductile iron. The bedrock is capable of leaving a nice surface on most hardwoods but the lie nieslen leaves a flawless surface. if you look at the specs betwen the veritas 4 1 2 and the ln 4 1 2 you will find that the lie nielsen has a thicker blade, a cyrogenically treated blade, and the lie nielsen is also a half pound heavier. A year later, i got the new #5 (ln). the bailey pattern is so much better than the ln 62 or the veritas laj imho, especially for the use cases you mentioned. the #5 does end grain better than the laj does everything else. also, don't be turned off of stanley. they were the lie nielsen of their day. Hey guys just a low angle vs. regular 45degree angle frog. i was thinking about geting a lie nielsen #5 jack plane or a #62 low angle jack plane. i figured u could just get a high angle blade and its pritty much a 45degree plane but im not realy sure which is beter so maybe some opinions would help and is the lie nielsen low angle block plane so much beter then a stanley no.661 2? i would love.

Wash hands after handling. no. 5 1 2 jack plane the heaviest of the jack planes, the no. 5½ is comfortable and superbly balanced. it is as wide as the no. 7 jointer but only two thirds the length. ideal for truing wider boards. 14 3 4" long. blade is 2 3 8" wide x .140" thick. I have; however, used both planes and reviewed the clifton for fine woodworking magazine. i would put them at dead even. the difference in blade thickness is unimportant. both are copies of the stanley bedrock which stanly stopped making in 1943. the clifton retains a rounded cheek (while both the bedrock and the lie nielsen have squared cheeks.
