Originally back in 2008 a small group of people, concerned that little action was being taken to halt the progress of greys into the valley, formed the upper wansbeck and coquetdale squirrel group. since then many changes have taken place, and as most of our volunteers live in the coquet valley we became the coquetdale squirrel group in 2012. True, their main source of nutrition comes from some nuts and the seeds from pine cones. but, by definition, red squirrels are omnivores, and their diets extend to include flowers, berries, mushrooms, bugs, mice, eggs, and small birds. red squirrels have a firm grasp on food storage. using tree cavities, underbrush piles, or dens as their own. The red squirrel is one of our most iconic, much loved mammals immortalised as 'squirrel nutkin' by beatrix potter. seeing a flash of red for the first time is a very special moment and something that everybody should experience. red squirrels also play a vital role in regenerating our woodlands, burying nuts and seeds which grow into future.

We monitor squirrel activity, both red and grey, recording sightings from members of the public as well as from our members. we also remove greys by trapping in areas of encroachment. all the voluntary groups operate under the umbrella of northern red squirrels (nrs), and all our sightings are reported to red squirrels northern england (rsne).
