Though the senate lost most of its political power under the empire, families of senatorial rank were still the elite. like the nineteenth century aristocracy, they expected senior military positions to go to them. the tribunus laticlavius was the second in command of a legion, the most junior officer role of the senatorial class. The legion was subdivided into ten units called cohorts. nine of the cohorts had 480 soldiers. the cohorts were subdivided into six centuries, of about 80 men each. each century was commanded by a centurion. each century also had a tesserarius, a signifer, a cornicen, and an optio. the tesserarius got 1½ pay, and was in control of guard duties.
