The Barnevelder Breed Profile Cluckin The barnevelder chicken, or barnie, is a dual purpose breed originally from the netherlands. they are medium sized, friendly birds known for their striking black and brown feather patterns. also, they lay dark brown eggs, make great pets, and are perfect for beginners due to their calm nature. The barnevelder chicken breed originated in the small dutch town of barneveld in the late 19th century. created by crossing local dutch landrace chickens with various asiatic breeds, including the cochin, malayan, and brahma, the barnevelder was carefully developed to exhibit particular traits. the breed was primarily bred for its high quality. Barnevelder chickens are traditionally exceptional winter layers. pullets can lay between 170 and 200 eggs annually. pure barnevelder varieties lay dark brown to almost chocolate eggs. they are among a few chicken breeds that can lay throughout the wintertime. your barnevelder hens can lay between 3 and four eggs weekly. By 1898, the gold laced wyandottes were added too, but even so, there was too much variety in the barnevelder lines to call for an official breed standard. this is why the original breeders decided to make an effort in order to create the breed standard that they wanted for so long.
