Vintage Review Mcintosh C28 Preamplifier Resistor Magazine The mcintosh c28 solid state preamplifier, while a vintage piece of gear and as such its age and condition must be taken into account, is in my opinion, deserved of its historic place in hi fi annals. it shows refined sound and vintage audio are not contradictions. be you a music lover or audiophile with a gear fetish, it is difficult not to. Unfortunately, the c28 is a maintenance heavy unit with like three dozen non sealed pots and switches that all require cleaning annually at minimum. given these units are 40 years old now, a full restoration is in order if you'd like to enjoy it to its fullest. on this particular preamp, this is far more involved than a recap.

Vintage Review Mcintosh C28 Preamplifier Resistor Magazine Vintage means tubes, means c 22. classic means early ss. if you want traditional, c 29. for a little more advanced a c 30. if you want something different a c 37. the ultimate in flexibility a c34 or c40. if i were going to have a tube pre amp mine would be a c 2200 with frank gow's name on the face plate, but would use a dynavector phono stage. Not only did several c28’s have these caps, but many of the caps in the images appeared to be the same, leading me to believe they may have been oem. so i concluded that if mcintosh originally included these plugs with the c28, there had to be a good reason. i’m curious to get the thoughts of others on rca shorting plugs for low level inputs. Jan 18, 2018. #1. i recently bought a mcintosh c28 preamplifier on ebay. it looks pretty original from the pictures (original caps, etc.). i like restoring vintage gear, and would like to upgrade it while keeping it as original as possible. i can see a lot of information on the c28 on audiokarma, but in many different posts. Vintage mcintosh preamplifiers and amps – like the c28 preamp here – are imbued of a rarified authenticity for high fidelites akin to the original grateful dead lineup of garcia, weir, mckernan, lesh and kreutzmann with deadheads: no matter how phenomenal or mediocre their performance, fans worshipping their sound will not be silenced.

The c 28 is not a pre pro its just a pre (preamplifier) & its resale value is around $500 unless you have both factory boxes then it jumps up to around $650 if its a mint unit, the resale price is greatly affected by the condition of the unit, any scratches anywhere, nicks on the end caps, bubbles behind the glass face (usually around headphone. Review: mcintosh c28 preamplifier (ss) review by brian at audio asylum. 1st generation ss preamp. very typical mcintosh build quality, sound quality and component quality. these are overshawdowed by the older tube preamps but, are excellent in their own right. i have had mine for some 20 years and found it to be quiet, open detailed.
